In high school, we offer workshops at a college campus, financial planning assistance, overnight college tours, and scholarships everything they need to get into a good four-year school. We champion the practice of valuing every voice, demystifying public speaking and increasing access to tools, mentors, and experiences that build confidence. While public speaking is a core skill many great leaders possess, the world lacks welcoming spaces to practice speaking up, express yourself, and strengthen community connections. This is especially true for women and girls who continue to face struggles and confront biases when developing their leadership skills and navigating inequitable barriers in society. To feel capable to lead and speak, girls need to first feel like they belong to a community that cares about them. Through high-quality public speaking education, we help our participants speak in a clear, engaging way that represents who they are and what they care about, focusing on storytelling, debate, self-advocacy, poetry, presentation, and listening. We offer programs for individuals, schools, and organizations, all focused on helping people of all ages be authentic, inspire positive change, address social anxieties, and feel connected to others. Our public speaking programs and accompanying resources create welcoming practice spaces to be brave and vulnerable and process how to navigate conditions that make it hard to speak up, capabilities that will serve them the rest of their lives.

The creation of UAA was inspired by the lack of educational equity in many school districts across the United States, the lack of 21st Century Learning opportunities that continues to affect outcomes for many students and families of color and to STOP the School-to-Prison-Pipeline.?  The horrible and ugly truth is that the number of Privatized Prisons are built across the United States based upon data received from the Department of Education regarding students under-performing in reading, and math, student suspensions, and expulsions rates, and high school drop-out rates. It is even more shocking to learn that the School-to-Prison-Pipeline? is determined as early as Pre-K through 3rd grade and especially affects students of color in the Education Gap, students with disabilities, and students. UAA’s successful pilot project revealed that evidenced-based and researched-validated student support interventions and resources tremendously improved outcomes for students in the education gap, and students with disabilities.  UAA’s pilot identified six (6) types of student profiles receiving support interventions by UAA’s Educational First Responders/Advocates at five, (5) school districts: Sacramento City, Twin Rivers, Elk Grove, Natomas, & Folsom-Cordova.

Root & Rebound’s model is rooted in the needs and expertise of people who are directly impacted. We are lawyers, advocates, and activists committed to creating a more just and restorative society. We carry out this work through an innovative model which combines interconnected prongs to dismantle racial and economic inequity from all sides:

EDUCATE: In 2020, we educated and trained more people about the rights of justice-impacted people than ever before, reaching 5,500+ people with records, their families, and service providers who support them. Since our founding, we have educated and trained over 12,500 people.

ADVOCATE: R&R attorneys provided comprehensive free legal support to 1,800+ justice-impacted people and their families with 2,200+ different legal issues from reducing barriers to employment to reuniting with their children. Since our founding, we’ve provided legal support to more than 7,500 people.

REFORM: We continue to bring together directly impacted activists and movement partners to protect the rights of justice-impacted people. This year, we successfully opened pathways to housing, higher education, and employment for people with records. As we ramped up our reform work over the past three years, we’ve led and worked alongside coalitions to advance eight major legislative reforms in these arenas.
