EXPLORE OUR
RESOURCE GUIDES
There’s a lot of fear and uncertainty right now, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Together, we have power — the power of knowledge, the power of coming together, and the power to act.
The following resource guides are intended to support California youth and the organizations that support them. The guides were curated by Alliance for Girls and its member organizations to meet this moment.
To add resources, suggest a guide topic, or if you have questions or comments, please e-mail: resources@alliance4girls.org
To post these resource guides on your organization’s social media account, you can use these images. When posting these resource guides, please tag @alliance4girls for more reach.
Here are important resources — across all topics — to check regularly during this turbulent time:
The Impacts of the Recent Executive Orders on Nonprofits (National Council of Nonprofits)
All of the Trump Administration’s Major Moves, Filter by Topic (The New York Times)
Legal Challenges Tracker (Just Security)
Resources for Navigating the New Federal Policy Landscape (Child Focus), shared by Justice and Joy National Collaborative
THIS INTERACTIVE DIRECTORY IS
comprised of some organizations
that provide programming and/or services for girls and/or gender expansive youth in California, with a focus on the Bay Area and Los Angeles County.
Please note that the following is not a comprehensive directory of all girl and/or gender-expansive youth-serving organizations in California. In order to be included on AFG’s Girls Resource Hub, an organization must complete this form sharing the name of their organization, the ages of girls and/or gender-expansive youth they serve, the cost of their services, their contact information and website, and a brief description of the services that they provide to girls and/or gender-expansive youth.
AFG encourages all users to do more research about the organizations on this list if they are interested in accessing their services and/or programming to ensure it is a good fit for them. The list is intended only as a resource and inclusion on the list does not indicate endorsement of the organization by AFG’s Girls Resources Hub.
If you have any questions or concerns about the Girls Resource Hub or any of the organizations listed, please email us at kailin@alliance4girls.org.

Bay Area Girls Rock Camp serves self-identified girls, trans, and gender-expansive youth. We use music as a tool for cultivating community, support and power for youth who often struggle to find those things in the music industry and the rest of the world. Former BAGRC staff member and longtime community organizer, Shawna Scroggins, came up with an acronym for GIRLS that encompasses who we are as an organization, who we serve, and what we strive to accomplish: Gender Inclusivity through Radical Love and Support. BAGRC runs three youth programs. Summer Camp is a week-long session, of which we have three during the months of June and July. Campers will spend the mornings in instrument instruction, learning either vocals, guitar, bass, drums, or keyboards, and the afternoons in band practice, where they co-write original songs to perform for their family and friends at the end of each session! When they are not in instrument instruction or band practice, they are in workshops which vary day-to-day, but all center around the intersections of art and activism. Girls Rock After School Program (GRASP) is a 10-week program that starts in early January and ends mid-March. Campers meet on Tuesday and/or Thursday afternoons, with Tuesdays being instrument instruction days and Thursdays being band practice days. GRASP campers also attend workshops outside of their instrument and band time. We also have a practice space that is open year-round. The practice space is open to anyone who has attended Summer Camp or GRASP before, and is completely free of cost. It is equipped with instruments so youth don't need to bring their own. The practice space is mentored by an adult volunteer, who can help youth with their instrument or just be there to quietly supervise.

Since 2011, CURYJ has been building community relationships and mobilizing young leaders to organize and create in the movement to end mass incarceration and youth criminalization. CURYJ was born when our co-founders, who lived through the impacts of systemic violence and incarceration, set out to beautify their neighborhood, engage youth in the area and coordinate pro-bono legal defense for local defendants in the Fruitvale gang injunctions. As defendants and supporters of those targeted by the gang injunction, the five co-founders became powerful advocates at the state capitol and locally, speaking on issues impacting boys and men of color. Early in the journey, CURYJ formed coalitions and partnerships to repeal Prop 21, successfully ending gang injunctions in California and initiated the Aztlán Beautification Movement (ABM) to spread culture and healing art in the streets of Oakland. What had been created went far beyond defeating the gang injunctions, and CURYJ became a family, a safe place and a platform for building community. CURYJ has created opportunities and programming for youth to build their own futures and transform community through culturally rooted healing, relationship building and systems impacted youth-led activism. Recently, CURYJ youth have galvanized people power by organizing to pass Prop 57 (Co-authored by CURYJ) which ended direct file of minors in California. CURYJ is a local member of the Justice Reinvestment Coalition of Alameda County and leads the California Alliance for Youth and Community Justice which is made up of partners from across the state uniting to stop youth incarceration. Through our youth programs, life coaching, policy organizing and restorative retreats and trainings, we are building the world we believe in, where relationships matter and young people from all backgrounds are valued and supported in community.

DBT was originally designed to treat Borderline Personality Disorder, but has been adapted to be useful to anyone and everyone. DBT is less pathologizing than traditional psychotherapy, because the people who are receiving help are considered students, as opposed to sick patients. DBT encourages participants to take their treatment into their own hands, with the support of a professional coach and of a group. Unorthodocs Inc. is a punk alternative to traditional psychotherapy and mental health practices that favors group process, mentorship, peer-coaching, community outreach, laughter & love.

The Center for Young Women's Development is now doing business as the Young Women's Freedom Center. Through our Sisters' Rising Program, we reach young women through direct outreach in juvenile hall, county jail and low-income communities in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. We work with them to create positive change in their lives as soon as possible. We utilize trauma-informed curricula and healing-centered organizing in concert with alliance building, strategic campaigns, and policy advocacy to place historically muted voices of young women at the center of decision-making conversations. With these strategies aligned, we empower young women to achieve personal and systemic freedom. We partner with Probation, District Attorney, and Public Defender's Offices to facilitate early access to serve young women most in need. We provide training, referrals, and court advocacy to help young women build their personal power and reduce recidivism. We apply our strength-based methodology daily to create better more sustainable life outcomes for young women and their families. Select young women enter Sister's Rising through a paid internship. They're offered opportunities to learn and grow in a safe space. After successful completion of the internship, they graduate to Junior Staff of The Center to maintain the cycle of outreach and support in our hard-to-reach communities. Over the next twelve months, staff will conduct ongoing outreach and trainings in lock-up and on the streets, base-build and organize around housing, strengthen alliances with key public, private, and community partners and launch our blog series, "Girls In Cages"- a collection of poetry, art, and narratives written by system-involved young women to raise awareness of their unique needs.

We teach girls to exercise the power of their voice through programs grounded in social-emotional learning. Girls Leadership centers gender and racial equity in our work to address the internal and external barriers to leadership development. There are 25 million K-12th grade girls in the United States. If you combine the efforts of all national girl-serving organizations, they collectively are only reaching about three million, or about 12% of the country’s girls, leaving a staggering 22 million girls in the US without support. Girls Leadership’s bold goal is to close that gap.
