EXPLORE OUR

RESOURCE GUIDES

There’s a lot of fear and uncertainty right now, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Together, we have power — the power of knowledge, the power of coming together, and the power to act.

The following resource guides are intended to support California youth and the organizations that support them. The guides were curated by Alliance for Girls and its member organizations to meet this moment.

To add resources, suggest a guide topic, or if you have questions or comments, please e-mail: resources@alliance4girls.org

To post these resource guides on your organization’s social media account, you can use these images. When posting these resource guides, please tag @alliance4girls for more reach.

Here are important resources — across all topics — to check regularly during this turbulent time:

THIS INTERACTIVE DIRECTORY IS

comprised of some organizations

that provide programming and/or services for girls and/or gender expansive youth in California, with a focus on the Bay Area and Los Angeles County.

Please note that the following is not a comprehensive directory of all girl and/or gender-expansive youth-serving organizations in California. In order to be included on AFG’s Girls Resource Hub, an organization must complete this form sharing the name of their organization, the ages of girls and/or gender-expansive youth they serve, the cost of their services, their contact information and website, and a brief description of the services that they provide to girls and/or gender-expansive youth.

AFG encourages all users to do more research about the organizations on this list if they are interested in accessing their services and/or programming to ensure it is a good fit for them. The list is intended only as a resource and inclusion on the list does not indicate endorsement of the organization by AFG’s Girls Resources Hub.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Girls Resource Hub or any of the organizations listed, please email us at kailin@alliance4girls.org.

Learning at Hamlin is purposeful, joyful, and expansive. Hamlin girls learn inside the classrooms of our urban campus and outside in the greater Bay Area: in national parks, museums, and online. Through service learning and community partnerships, our girls are taught that learning at school has immediate relevance in real-life., We believe that success in the 21st century requires an intentional focus on critical thinking and problem solving, effective oral and written communication, collaboration, and creativity. While we embrace the importance of content knowledge in our program, we also are ignited by the words of our founder Sarah Dix Hamlin, who asserted that "the mere knowledge of the facts would be insufficient" to prepare the girls to meet the challenges of their time. Thus, our educational program emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge and its application in new and unfamiliar contexts. We strive for breadth and depth. We value engagement as well as reflection.

We teach girls to exercise the power of their voice through programs grounded in social-emotional learning. Girls Leadership centers gender and racial equity in our work to address the internal and external barriers to leadership development. There are 25 million K-12th grade girls in the United States. If you combine the efforts of all national girl-serving organizations, they collectively are only reaching about three million, or about 12% of the country’s girls, leaving a staggering 22 million girls in the US without support. Girls Leadership’s bold goal is to close that gap.

Our goal is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. During our 10-week programs, the girls train for the Girls on the Run 5K run/walk while learning life skills such as healthy decision-making and teamwork. Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. At each season's conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5K running event. Completing a 5K gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. The result: making the seemingly impossible, possible and teaching girls that they can.

Founded in 2013, Girls Garage is the first-ever design and building workshop for female youth in the United States. Through after-school and summer pathways, Girls Garage provides free and low-cost programs in carpentry, welding, architecture, engineering, and activist art to a diverse community of 200 girls per year. Integrating technical skills, college/career guidance, and community leadership, our programs equip girls with tools to build the world they want to see. In our workshop in Berkeley and under the guidance of our highly skilled all-female staff, we invite girls to bring their creative voice and put technical skills to work on real-world building projects that live in our community. Beyond power tools, Girls Garage is a physical space that provides a supportive and safe environment for girls to exercise voice and power. We provide 1:1 career and academic advising and workshops to develop the confidence and the communication skills to navigate the intersectional challenges facing young girls today. To date, girls have built 130 projects ranging from furniture for a domestic abuse shelter to a greenhouse for a community garden and fruit stand for an organization serving refugee families. All teen participants attend the program at no cost to their families. 66% of girls are girls of color, and 60% of girls attend Girls Garage for 3 or more years.
