Studies find that girls do not pursue jazz after middle school because often there are few girls in bands and few girls are chosen for select jazz bands.  Middle school is particularly difficult for girls because they want to fit in.  In jazz, the boys step in and take the solos.  The girls become wrongly convinced they do not have these soloing skills or lead part abilities.  There is also a shortage of female instructors.  Some male instructors encourage the girls but there is a stronger connection when the boys and girls realize that women are professionals and role models.  Then we have the male instructors who let these diminishing expectations for girls run rampant in their classrooms and practice sessions.  The jazz world is quite traditional and misogynistic.  One-on-one instruction provides opportunities for sexual assault and/or harassment and girls must be prepared. The girl’s camp specifically teaches girls how to react and who to turn to in order to become full musicians.  Our instructors have seen it all, from anti-gay behavior to sexual harassment and abuse.  Girls are taught to become allies with one another and by their choice, leaders of their bands. The teachers create a road map for successful musical practice, musicianship, instrument facility, and soloing strategies.  There is some focus on music theory and the history of women in jazz.  We also hold jazz jams where girls are invited to play with older female players.  Girls are encouraged to join our advocacy efforts.  Some girls may have repercussions if they are associated with a group that challenges male norms in jazz and their identity must then remain secret.  We serve to help girls realize their amateur or professional aspirations.

The Representation Project (TRP) is a cutting-edge global 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to gender equality by exposing harmful gender stereotypes in media and culture and advocating for an end to limiting gender norms. We transform culture by shifting the public’s attitudes and behavior around limiting gender stereotypes and norms through the use of documentary films, education, and activism. In 2011, Jennifer Siebel Newsom founded TRP in response to the overwhelming public demand for ongoing education and social action in support of her first film, Miss Representation. Since then, TRP released Newsom’s second film, The Mask You Live In, and a third film, The Great American Lie. The organization is well known for creating popular social media activism campaigns such as #NotBuyingIt, #AskHerMore, and #RepresentHer. We give voice to the next generation of change agents through youth education and activation programs, including an online youth media lab and media training academies for students.

Bay Area Girls Rock Camp serves self-identified girls, trans, and gender-expansive youth. We use music as a tool for cultivating community, support and power for youth who often struggle to find those things in the music industry and the rest of the world. Former BAGRC staff member and longtime community organizer, Shawna Scroggins, came up with an acronym for GIRLS that encompasses who we are as an organization, who we serve, and what we strive to accomplish: Gender Inclusivity through Radical Love and Support. BAGRC runs three youth programs. Summer Camp is a week-long session, of which we have three during the months of June and July. Campers will spend the mornings in instrument instruction, learning either vocals, guitar, bass, drums, or keyboards, and the afternoons in band practice, where they co-write original songs to perform for their family and friends at the end of each session! When they are not in instrument instruction or band practice, they are in workshops which vary day-to-day, but all center around the intersections of art and activism. Girls Rock After School Program (GRASP) is a 10-week program that starts in early January and ends mid-March. Campers meet on Tuesday and/or Thursday afternoons, with Tuesdays being instrument instruction days and Thursdays being band practice days. GRASP campers also attend workshops outside of their instrument and band time. We also have a practice space that is open year-round. The practice space is open to anyone who has attended Summer Camp or GRASP before, and is completely free of cost. It is equipped with instruments so youth don't need to bring their own. The practice space is mentored by an adult volunteer, who can help youth with their instrument or just be there to quietly supervise.

Since 2011, CURYJ has been building community relationships and mobilizing young leaders to organize and create in the movement to end mass incarceration and youth criminalization. CURYJ was born when our co-founders, who lived through the impacts of systemic violence and incarceration, set out to beautify their neighborhood, engage youth in the area and coordinate pro-bono legal defense for local defendants in the Fruitvale gang injunctions. As defendants and supporters of those targeted by the gang injunction, the five co-founders became powerful advocates at the state capitol and locally, speaking on issues impacting boys and men of color. Early in the journey, CURYJ formed coalitions and partnerships to repeal Prop 21, successfully ending gang injunctions in California and initiated the Aztlán Beautification Movement (ABM) to spread culture and healing art in the streets of Oakland. What had been created went far beyond defeating the gang injunctions, and CURYJ became a family, a safe place and a platform for building community. CURYJ has created opportunities and programming for youth to build their own futures and transform community through culturally rooted healing, relationship building and systems impacted youth-led activism. Recently, CURYJ youth have galvanized people power by organizing to pass Prop 57 (Co-authored by CURYJ) which ended direct file of minors in California. CURYJ is a local member of the Justice Reinvestment Coalition of Alameda County and leads the California Alliance for Youth and Community Justice which is made up of partners from across the state uniting to stop youth incarceration. Through our youth programs, life coaching, policy organizing and restorative retreats and trainings, we are building the world we believe in, where relationships matter and young people from all backgrounds are valued and supported in community.
