AFG Partnership with About-Face to Futher Our Meeting Girls Needs Initiative (MGNI)
As part of the Meeting Girls Needs Initiative (MGNI), our school partnerships program, in SFUSD, Alliance for Girls (AFG) partnered with About-Face this summer.
Together, we worked to advance one of the recommendations that arose from the Girls Leading Change research report and the community meetings executed earlier this year: Train girls on social media literacy so that they can critique existing media, as well as develop their own media tools to disseminate information to their peers about how to report sexual harassment and access community resources for support.
The AFG and About-Face partnership aimed to provide media literacy training for girls, and produce a youth-led Title IX rights media dissemination tool for SFUSD. About-Face’s Hénia Belalia and AFG’s Nakia Dillard led the work. Eleven girls participated in the program.
With About-Face’s curriculum, girls learned skills to deconstruct media messages. Girls also worked with local artists and learned how to write songs, create short films, make graphic designs, and record their own podcasts. Girls also learned about SFUSD’s sexual harassment policy and reporting procedures, as well as available community resources for survivors. Girls combined their media making skills to produce tools to challenge media messages and provide peers with resources and information about their rights.
The tools produced by the girls will be used to disseminate among students, as well as at least one department in the school district. Follow us on Facebook to keep up with their work!
