Celebrating Black Resistance

The theme for this year's Black History Month celebrations is Black Resistance which honors the resilience and triumph of the Black community and our leaders in the face of laws and systems that were created to exclude them. This theme is an opportunity to celebrate the perseverance of the Black culture and spirit in spite of racial terrorism that seeks to break them.  Black leaders and activists throughout history and today have pushed tirelessly for American society, and the world at large, to take a hard look at the continuous state-sanctioned violence, oppression, and dehumanization of Black people that is the norm across the globe.

However, as we celebrate, it is essential to remember that Black Resistance is not just found in protests against racial injustice, but in our joy, our wellness, and intersectional identities as well. Black Resistance is Black girls and gender nonconforming youth thriving. It is investing abundantly in their dreams, power, and leadership.

In honor of this theme, throughout this month Alliance for Girls is uplifting the Black women and gender non-conforming led organizations within our network that are creating radically safe spaces that affirm the full humanity of Black girls and gender-expansive youth. These organizations model an intersectional approach to advance gender equity by centering the experiences, ideas and solutions of girls and gender-expansive youth of color, especially those that identify as Black. We honor the innumerable contributions, strength, and wisdom of Black women, girls, and gender-expansive youth that are a bedrock of the girl-serving sector.

Join us in celebrating Black girls and gender-expansive youth and in learning from their leadership and vision!
