Research overview:

In tandem to collecting data on girls’ expressed needs during COVID-19, Alliance for Girls is collecting data on COVID-19's impact on girl-serving organizations financially and programmatically.

Key findings:

The girl-serving sector was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to data collected from 42 girl-serving organizations in the Bay Area, almost 30% of these organizations has to close their doors due to the loss of funding and staff burnout. The total estimated financial loss from 17 of these organizations was over $3.7 million dollars.

Recommendations:

Funders and government agencies need to increase funding to girl-serving organizations to:

  • Help these organization train their staff  and shift their programming to virtual and remote spaces that promote girls’ and gender expansive youth safety, learning and leadership;

  • Increase resources to these organizations to maintain or increase their capacity and recover from financial loss; and

  • Increase resources to support staff’s mental & emotional health, ability to balance working from home, and the increase in work.
