Join us for a conversation: Reimagining Safety on BART | Tuesday, April 23rd
In our 2019 Together We Rise report, 100% of the 63 girls and gender-expansive youth of color who participated in focus groups during this research study highlighted that they experience some form of physical and/or verbal harassment when taking public transit every day. The data and stories shared by girls* through this research became the rallying cry that mobilized AFG members to turn our research into action – creating the Not One More Girl (NOMG) initiative that embodied AFG’s mission to center girls in research, advocacy, and policy change to improve their lives.
We are now building upon the recommendations from NOMG and collaborating with BART to develop the first youth-informed evaluation framework. This framework will help BART assess the prevalence and impact of sexual harassment and gender-based violence on its trains and platforms, and use this data to inform policy and programming in the future.
Over the last three months, AFG and BART hosted intergenerational and interactive Community Learning Exchanges. These workshops convened girls and gender-expansive youth, leaders from girl-serving organizations, and community members who ride BART to reimagine how BART evaluates issues of safety, specifically when it comes to sexual harassment and gender-based violence.
To further expand our learning, AFG and BART are hosting a community meeting, Reimagining Safety on BART: Building a Youth-Informed Evaluation, on Tuesday, April 23rd, to share what we learned in the community learning exchanges, particularly from and with girls and gender-expansive youth of color, seek more input from our broader community on how safety should be assessed and upheld across BART’s system.
